    Description

Devoid of any royal or divine attributes, King Jayavarman VII portrait-statues represent a man in venerating meditation.  He is seated leaning slightly forward, with his hands on his lap in meditation.  His hear is pulled back and tied in a small bun like chignon.  His facial expression is accentuated by semi-closed eyes, a slight smile, large forehead, lips that are neither thin nor thick, and long ear lobes.  All of these traits represent the Khmer physiognomy.  The king's power as expressed by his facial expression evokes supreme knowledge, compassion and peacefulness.  The patina on this sculpture is absolutely stunning!  The green verdigris coloring is perfect in every way.

About King Jayavarman VII:  With regards to the arts, King Jayavarman VII was responsible for the construction of numerous temples in the Angkor region and in other provinces.  King Jayavarman VII was further championed as the greatest king of Angkor for liberating and unifying the country.  His legacy lives on today as many of the structures remaining today within Angkor Wat were built during his reign.  At the center of Angkor Thom is the Bayon Temple, famous for its distinct 50 towers, each bearing the large faces of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshavara on all four sides.  These faces are thought to be copied from the actual face of King Jayavarman VII, whose smiles are so gentle that it is often referred to as the Khmer smile.  This great king was a devout Buddhist of the Mahayana sect.

    Care

Brass statues from Thailand do not need much maintenance.  The best way to maintain the statue is to simply dust the piece periodically to keep any dirt from accumulating.  They can be used for both indoor and outdoor use.

"You can use soap, warm water and a cotton cloth to periodically go over the statue to remove any dust or dirt buildup."

You can use soap, warm water and a cotton cloth to periodically go over the statue to remove any dust or dirt buildup.  If you are really interested in making the statue shine you can use some natural oil, like coconut oil or olive oil, and a cotton rag to wipe down the metal portions of the piece.  You can use a toothbrush as well to get into the small crevices of the statue like the hands and hair.

Thai brass's durability makes it perfect for cold winters and hot summers of any climate.  The metal can stand up to the harshest conditions of heat and bitter cold.  We suggest you bathe the sculpture every couple of months so that dirt does not collect on the sculpture and then use a cotton cloth with some natural oil to give the statue a shine.
