    Best Experience - 2.20.2015

I really appreciate Mr. Kyle Tortora for answering my every question in detail in emails and also on the phone before I bought the sculptures. I ordered a matching pair of Nataraja and Sivakami Amman bronze sculptures. I got what I expected from the photos that are shown in the web-site. I will send a photo of how I display the sculptures in my Hindu home shrine once I have completed the construction of the shrine in the next six months. Thank you so much for your wonderful services. God bless you always.

Wonderful Aesthetic And Spiritual Treasures - 2.12.2015

We couldn't' be more pleased with the 36" Vishnu and 10" Ganesh we ordered from Lotus Sculpture. Each piece arrived perfectly and safely packaged and what a delight to open each of these packages and see the wonders they held. These sculptures are so beautifully and artfully crafted. I know we will continue to discover more and more of the intricate details, as Vishnu's power and Ganesh's sense of humor become more and more visible. We will always cherish what these sculptures have done to enhance our new home, both aesthetically and spiritually. Thank you, Carol Younghans and Ray Hockedy

Excellent customer service, great produce! - 2.9.2015

I had been looking for a Ho-Tei (Chinese "Laughing Buddha") sculpture and was having very little luck. Somehow I ran across Lotus Sculpture in an internet search and found what I was looking for. The price and shipping costs were quite reasonable, and a phone message left on their customer phone line was answered same day by one of the owners. My wife loves her Ho-Tei sculpture, thanks!!

    hmm... - 2.7.2015

i was going to give this experience a 4-star rating, subtracting one star because there's a small defect in the finish...but then i started looking back and forth from the image here on the website to the statue i received, to determine whether the defect was there before it shipped (the listing said Lotus Sculpture only had one of these statues and so the statue i received would be the very one in the photos), and i noticed that there's actually quite a bit of damage to the finish (though, admittedly, i wouldn't have recognized the biggest defect as a defect at all if i hadn't done this back-and-forth comparison thing). i'm thinking now that maybe what the listing said wasn't true, and that the statue i received is not the one in the photos. but if that's the case, then the listing was deceptive, which is plenty bad in its own way. i wonder what actually went on here. since the emails i've sent to Lotus Sculpture in the past have gone unanswered, i guess i'll give them a call. (meh. i much prefer email.)

    Description

This statue depicts lord Shiva killing the Hindu god of death Yama.  Shiva is captured in this sculpture in a active, energetic pose leaping onto the throat of Yama.  Shiva holds Yama's head in on of his 8 hands.  The sculpture captures the energy and movement of Shiva as he glides through the air.  His hair ripples behind him.  A stunning sculpture!

The Story of Markandeava and Shiva:
Markandeya was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. His father Mrikandu performed rigorous austerities to get a son. Lord Shiva appeared before him and said: "O Rishi, do you want a good son who will die in his sixteenth year or a bad and foolish son who will live for a long time?" Mrikandu replied: "O my venerable Lord, let me have a good son".

The boy came to know about his fate and began to worship Lord Shiva whole-heartedly with intense faith and devotion. The boy entered into deep meditation and Samadhi on the day decreed as the day of his death. The messengers of Lord Yama were not able to approach him. Hence, Yama himself went to take away his life. The boy prayed to Lord Shiva for protection and embraced the Linga. Then Yama threw his noose round the Linga and the boy. Lord Shiva came out of the Linga immediately and killed Yama with his trishul or trident to protect the boy. Lord Shiva was called Mrityunjaya and Kala-kala from that day.

Then the Devas approached Lord Shiva and said: "O Lord, salutations unto Thee. Pardon Yama for his mistake. O ocean of mercy, bring him back to life". Then Lord Shiva brought Yama back to life at the request of the gods. He also conferred a boon to the boy Markandeya that he should live for ever as a boy of sixteen years of age. He is a Chiranjivi. In South India, even now men and women bless a boy when he does prostration to them: "Live as a Chiranjivi like Markandeya".

About the Black Marble:  The black marble, called sange-rathek, is found in Jhansi, in the state of Bihar, India.  The stone is known for its wonderful deep black/blue color and the colored purple and yellow veins that flow through the stone.  Looking into a piece of sange-rathek is like staring into deep space and seeing distant galaxies.  It is a very unique and wonderful stone.  Sculpture is very rare to find in this stone because there are seldom pieces of raw stone large enough to accommodate a full-sized sculpture.

    About Shiva

Shiva the Destroyer (Sanskrit: Auspicious One), or Siva, is one of the main Deities of Hinduism, worshipped as the paramount lord by the Saivite sects of India. Shiva is one of the most complex gods of India, embodying seemingly contradictory qualities. He is the destroyer and the restorer, the great ascetic and the symbol of sensuality, the benevolent herdsman of souls and the wrathful avenger.
Shiva was originally known as Rudra, a minor deity addressed only three times in the Rig Veda.  He gained importance after absorbing some of the characteristics of an earlier fertility god and became Shiva, part of the trinity, or trimurti, with Vishnu and Brahma.
Shiva wears a snake coiled around his upper arms and neck symbolizing the power he has over the most deadly of creatures. Snakes are also used to symbolize the Hindu dogma of reincarnation. Their natural process of molting or shedding their skin is symbolic of the human soul's transmigration of bodies from one life to another.
Shiva's female consort and wife is Parvati; because of his generosity and reverence towards Parvati, Shiva is considered an ideal role model for a husband. The divine couple together with their sons - the six-headed Skanda and the elephant headed Ganesh - reside on Mount Kailasa in the Himalayas.
His guardian is Nandi (the white bull), whose statue can often be seen watching over the main shrine.  The bull is said to embody sexual energy, fertility.  Riding on its back, Shiva is in control of these impulses.
He often holds a trident, which represents the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu.  It is also said to represent the threefold qualities of nature: creation, preservation and destruction, although preservation is usually attributed to Vishnu.
As the destroyer, Shiva is dark and terrible, encircled with serpents and a crown of skulls.
Shiva often wears sacred Rudaksha beads, perhaps a reference to his earlier name Rudra.
The crescent moon Shiva wears on his crown, besides being a symbol of Kama the goddess of nightly love, also represents the bull, Nandi, a fertility symbol.
Shiva holds a skull that represents samsara, the cycle of life, death and rebirth.  Samsara is a central belief in Hinduism.  Shiva himself also represents this complete cycle because he is Mahakala, the Lord of Time, destroying and creating all things.
Shiva is represented in a variety of forms.  One such form is as a lingam.  The ovoid shape is a representation of the absolute perfection of Lord Shiva - if that which is beyond form had to be given form, the lingam would be the closest form to the mystical experience of the absolute perfection of Shiva.   Shiva is often pictured in a pacific mood with his consort Parvati, as the cosmic dancer Nataraja, as a naked ascetic, as a mendicant beggar, as a yogi, and as the androgynous union of Shiva and Parvati in one body (Ardhanarisvara).
Another example of Shiva's apparent synthesis of male and female attributes is seen in his earrings.  He wears one earring in the style of a man and the other as a female.
Shiva's third eye is a symbol of higher consciousness.  It is also a weapon he uses to destroy his enemies by emitting a fire missile which has the power to incinerate the three worlds.  He can also kill all the gods and other creatures during the periodic destruction of the universe.  Shiva's third eye first appeared when Parvati, his wife, playfully covered his other two eyes, so Shiva opened his third eye emitting his destructive missile endangering the three worlds.

    About the Artist

Balan Arimuvani is the artist behind all our colored marble statues.  He has worked with Lotus Sculpture since we started in 2002. His small marble workshop began with only him and 2 other workers.  His business has grown to 8 marble artists and now he has a granite workshop employing 30 workers for large granite statues. He continually credits Lotus Sculpture with his success saying it would not have been possible with out the continuing commissions from Lotus Sculpture.  Balan is a good friend of Kyle Tortora, the owner of Lotus Sculpture. He has a wife and two beautiful girls.

    Care

"Use a cotton cloth and gently buff the surface of the statue to bring out the natural polish of the stone."

White, red and black marble statues are easy to take care of as they just need some annual upkeep to keep them looking as they did when they were first carved.  Here are some easy tips to keep your White, red and black marble statues from Lotus Sculpture looking like the gods they are:
    • Dust the statue as needed to prevent dirt build up
    • To make the statue shine use a cotton cloth to buff the sculpture
    • You can use a small amount of natural oil such as coconut oil or olive oil to further polish the sculpture
    • Use a tooth brush to get into the hard to reach spaces of the sculpture
    • DO NOT TOUCH the painted surfaces of any of the white marble statues.  This will damage the painting if done often
We recommend keeping our marble statues in an indoor environment.  The statues are durable however not durable enough to brave the natural outdoors.  Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions regarding your wooden statue from Lotus Sculpture, (760) 994-4455 or info@lotussculpture.com.
