Bronze Krishna on Cow Statue, 24" - 3.25.2015

I bought a unique, one-of-a-kind statue from Lotus Sculpture which depict Krishna sitting sideways on a cow and playing his flute, while the cow has twisted her neck around so she can gaze up at him with loving eyes. It depicts a very touching moment. The cow's posture shows such love and devotion. I've never seen anything like it. The artistic balance between Krishna and the cow is wonderful, and Krishna is very well done, with a slight smile on his face as he plays his flute. It's the most remarkable statue of Krishna I've ever seen. In addition, the shipment was extremely prompt and a proper statement of value accompanied the statue. This has been a very good experience with Lotus Sculpture. --Maris Whitaker

Bought one last week, bought a second today - 3.24.2015

Purchased a 19" painted Ganesha. It arrived last week and it is better than expected. It was very well packed. The colors are vibrant and the hues are perfect. I was afraid they might be garish in hand, but those fears were completely unfounded. Beautiful color palette. The carving is well detailed. It is a very handsome piece. I couldn't be happier with it In fact, I was so happy that I just finished purchasing a 36" painted Garuda. Once I saw the quality of the Ganesh I felt confident in purchasing a more expensive piece. And eagerly awaiting its arrival. Had I the money and the room, I would be in trouble.

Good Product Good Service - 3.23.2015

This is the first time I bought a statue from Lotus Sculpture. It arrived the next day. Well packaged. It is a beautiful Ganesh hand made wooden statue. Suggestion: it would be nice if you could list on your website if the statues you get from India involve fair trade and fair labor. I am already looking on the website for my next purchase. Thank you for the great experience and importantly for making these beautiful pieces of art available for purchase in the US.

    Exactly as promised - 3.11.2015

I've known about Lotus Sculpture from Hinduism Today magazine and from the testimonies of friends. His site is first rate and exhaustively documented with beautiful photographs, dimensions and descriptions. I appreciate the breadth of sculptures available be they of museum quality, bronzes or brasses, or as in my case, resin volcanic stone suitable for extreme weather and a more modest budget. It was a relief to know that I was going to be pleased when I opened the box to see professional grade rigid foam packing surrounding a thing of beauty.

    All that I expected. - 3.10.2015

I recieved my stone resin Buddha and I am pleased with the product. Its much heavier and more solid than what I thought it would be. I wasnt wanting a flimsy, easily breakable statue. Thanks.

    • A stunning bronze sculpture of gopal Krishna
    • Krishna is surrounded by an amazing arch of 9 peaocks 2 yalis and a wealth of vegetation
    • Krishna is a hand made, one of a kind, bronze sculpture cast by the artists of South India using the lost wax process, a skill passed on for generations since the Chola period

    Description

Krishna is magnificent full of all the small details that make a masterpiece. The arch surrounding Krishna houses an array of 9 peacocks and two yalis mixed within the tendrils of vegetation from an Indian forest. A yali is a mythical beast that is a cross between a lion, an elephant and an alligator. The base of the statue has 5 cows and 2 calves carved in bas relief in them. The base is in three parts with two circular shaped foundations holding the arch and one oval shape under Krishna.  Krishna stands on a double lotus base. His vestments are typical of a statue done in Hoysala style (from Halebid, India) as they have all the jewels and decorations fit for a king. His slight smile and sublime countenance show Krishna to be enjoying playing his flute. No doubt the cow farmers daughters are close by listening to his melodies!

Defining Features of the Statue:  The arch surrounding Krishna is amazing.  At the top is peacock that has its' feathers spread like the rays of the sun.  There are 6 other peacocks spread throughout that arch.   At the bottom of the arch are two more yalis, the mythical beast that decorates the end of Krishna's flute.   There are numerous cows carved in the base of this piece.

    About Krishna

One of the most widely revered and most popular of all Indian divinities, is Krishna worshipped as the eighth incarnation (avatar) of Vishnu. Krishna became the focus of a large number of devotional cults, which over the centuries have produced a wealth of religious poetry, music, painting and sculpture.

The child Krishna was adored for his mischievous pranks; he also performed many miracles and slew demons. As a youth, the cowherd Krishna became renown as a lover, the sound of his flute prompting gopis (wives and daughters of the cowherds) to leave their homes to dance ecstatically with him in the forests. His favorite among them was the beautiful Radha. Krishna's youthful dalliances with the gopis are interpreted as symbolic of the loving interplay between God and the human soul. Krishna affirms life in his pranks, music and lovemaking.

The rich variety of legends associated with Krishna's life led to an abundance of representation in painting and sculpture. The most reknown story surrounding Krishna is the Bahgavad Gita or Gita which is considered one of the most importatnt Hindu texts. The Gita is the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna. Krishna is explaining to Arjuna that it is Arjuna's moral obligation to fight in a war that will put him against some members of his family. Krishna like Vishnu is an upholder of the moral order of the universe.

    Care

Bronze is an extremely durable metal made from a combination of 5 metals; copper, iron, tin, with minute additions of silver and gold.  This combination is called Panchaloha bronze and is the basis for making the sacred Hindu temple statues of India and the world.  Copper is the most prevalent metal in the alloy.  Copper also gives the metal a softer composition that allows the bronze artisans to carve the details that are prevalent in each piece.    All the South Indian bronze sculpture Lotus Sculpture carries are Panchaloham and thus suited for any home altar or community temple.

"If you would like the piece to shine use a cotton cloth with some coconut oil or other natural oil to wipe down the bronze statue."

Because of the durability of the metal not much is needed to maintain a bronze sculpture.  Many of our customers purchase a bronze statue and perform daily puja and abhisheka consisting of bathing the Hindu deity in ghee, milk, coconut milk or other liquids.  In this case nothing is needed to keep the statue clean as it will be bathed daily.  If the sculpture is used for "darshan" or simply viewing the sculpture it is best to dust the statue as needed so no dirt collects in the details of the sculpture. For both polished golden bronzes and antique patina bronze statues if you would like the sculpture to shine use a cotton cloth with some coconut oil or other natural oil to wipe down the piece as needed.

Many of our bronze Hindu statues have been placed in outdoor temples.  Bronze's durability makes it perfect for cold winters and hot summers of any climate.  We suggest you bathe the sculpture every couple of months so that dirt does not collect on the sculpture and then use a cotton cloth with some natural oil to give the statue a shine.  Both indoors and outdoors a bronze statue can be left alone which, overtime, will give the bronze an antique patina.

On some bronze statues you can see small hints of lime green, verde-gris patina.  Some people prize this color for its age others want to remove it.  If you would like to remove the verde-gris use a tooth brush with some coconut oil or other natural oil and lightly go over the verde-gris.  This should remove the unwanted patina from the sculpture.
