The beautiful Saraswati sits atop a double lotus base with Mahakala abover her on the arch. Mahakala is the devourer or "great time" as in the end, time devours everything. Mahakala is typically seen in arches in statuary and above doorways in Hindu homes and temples. Saraswati is playing the veena and holds a copy of the vedas and a set of mala beads. On both sides of the base are small versions of the Hindu god Ganesh and the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The sculpture is a beautiful dark wood color which brings out the natural veins in the wood.
