- Vishnu and Lakshmi sit upon Vishnu vehicle Garuda coming to rescue the elephant king from the clutches of a giant crocodile
- The carving and the painting are both extraordinary examples of South Indian wood craftmanship

- A fantastic sculpture hand carved from one piece of wood
- Gajendra Moksha ships directly from our California gallery
The base provides a quiet contrast from the action on the upper part of the sculpture. Two attendants are dancing in a position much like Nataraja. They both sport mustaches and hold the symbols of Vishnu; a discus and conch. The carving of the sculpture is equally matched by the beautiful of the painting. The dynamic colors match the rich colors used in South Indian temples. A stunning sculpture displaying a great story!
Vishnu Saves Gajendra (the elephant king): While enjoying a bath with his herd on a lotus-lake, Gajendra, the king of elephants, disturbed a mighty crocodile who grabbed one of his legs and began pulling him under the water. Trapped within the crocodile's strong jaws, Gajendra tried in vain to free himself. He struggled hard but the crocodile's hold remained as firm as ever. Gajendra called out to his herd, but they were too frightened to come to his aid. As he was about to drown, the elephant-king picked up a lotus with his trunk. Lifting it towards the heavens, he cried, "I offer this to Vishnu, my lord, the refuge of the helpless." Instantly, the lord descended from Vaikuntha on his mount Garuda, and liberated Gajendra by striking down the crocodile with his discus.
Wood statues are easy to take care of as they just need some annual upkeep to keep them looking as they did when they were first carved. All the wood used by Lotus Sculpure's artists is dried out for months. Moisture causes cracks in the sculpture as the wood contracts and expands in different temperatures. Our wood has little to no moisture in it assuring that the sculpture is not going to crack in its journey into different climates. Here are some simple tips to keep your statue in good condition:
- Dust the statue as needed to prevent dirt build up
- To make the statue shine use a natural wood cleaner and a cotton cloth to buff the sculpture
We recommend keeping wooden statues in an indoor environment. Wood statues can go outside however, they will wear more quickly and develop an antique appearance. If you would like to put a wood statue from Lotus Sculpture outside and keep the same appearance of the sculpture we would recommend first coating the statue with a couple of layers of sealant or polyurethane. We would then recommend placing the statue in a partially covered area. The more exposure to the elements the more the statue will wear over time.
