      • This standing Buddha holds both palms pressed together in anjali mudra at the chest, the gesture of reverence and sacred greeting found across Buddhist and Hindu traditions throughout Asia
      • His monastic robe falls in broad sweeping curves from shoulder to ground, carved in a fluid style that suggests the weight and movement of real cloth, covering the feet entirely at the base
      • In warm saffron stone hand-carved in Indonesia, this sculpture brings a graceful and devotional presence to a garden entrance, path, or outdoor altar
      • Buddha is hand carved from one large block of lava stone, completely one of a kind and is perfect for a garden in any weather, hot or cold
The standing Buddha in prayer is one of the most universally understood gestures in sacred art, the palms pressed together at the chest in anjali mudra, a gesture of reverence, greeting, and the recognition of the sacred in all things. This posture appears across Buddhist and Hindu traditions throughout Asia and carries the same meaning in each: a being fully present, offering respect, and acknowledging the connection between self and the divine. The urna is visible at the center of the forehead, and the ushnisha rises in tight spiral curls at the crown, both classical marks of an enlightened being in the Theravada and Mahayana sculptural traditions.

This sculpture shows the Buddha standing with both palms pressed together in anjali mudra at chest height, the fingers pointing upward and the hands meeting precisely at the center. The monastic sanghati robe covers both shoulders and falls in long sweeping curves from chest to ankle, the fabric rendered in broad flowing lines that curve and gather naturally as cloth would under gravity. Unlike the tightly ridged parallel folds seen in other robes, this carving style uses wider, more fluid strokes that give the robe a sense of movement and softness. The robe drapes fully to the ground, covering the feet entirely, and the lower section fans outward slightly at the base. The figure stands on a shallow circular lotus base with a simple petal border. The face is serene with downcast eyes, a straight nose, and closed lips.

Hand-carved from saffron stone in Indonesia, the sculpture has the warm dark brown surface with ochre undertones characteristic of this material, visible along the carved ridges of the robe where light catches the stone. The matte hand-finished surface weathers gracefully outdoors, developing a natural patina over time. At 49 inches tall this is a strong vertical presence that works well flanking a garden entrance, standing along a path, or serving as the centerpiece of an outdoor meditation or altar space.

"If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change."
       ~ Buddha~
The Buddha, whose original name was Siddhartha Gautama, was the founder of Buddhism, the religion and the philosophical system that produced a great culture throughout much of southern and eastern Asia.  Buddha, meaning "awakened one" or "enlightened one" is a title not a name.  In Hindu Dogma, the Buddha is viewed as being the 9th avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu.
The Buddha was a son of the rulers Sakyas.  He was married at the age of 16 and lived in luxury and comfort sheltered from the harsh realities of life.  When he was 29 he realized that men are subject to old age, sickness and death.  He became aware of the suffering inherent in existence.  He resolved to give up princely life and become a wandering ascetic (samana) in search for the Truth.
With the two of samanas he attained mystical states of elevated consciousness but he failed to find the Truth.  He continued his search and was joined by five ascetics in a grove near Uruvela, where he practiced sever austerities and self-mortification for six years.  When he fainted away in weakness, he abandoned ascetic practices to seek his own path to Enlightenment.  Discarding the teachings of his contemporaries, through meditation he achieved Enlightenment, or ultimate understanding.  There after the Buddha instructed his followers in the dharma (truth) and the "Middle Way" a path between worldly life and extremes of self-denial.
The essence of the Buddha's early preaching was said to be the four Noble truths: 1) life is fundamentally disappointment and suffering.  2) suffering is a result of one's desires for pleasure, power, and continued existence; 3) to stop disappointment and suffering on must stop desiring; and 4) the way to stop desiring and thus suffering is the Noble eight fold path - right views, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right awareness and right concentration.  The realization of the truth of anatman (no eternal self) was taught as essential for the indescribable state of release called nirvana.
