This large and magnificent Tibetan thangka depicts Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha, at the moment of his enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree. At 90 inches tall and 73 inches wide, this is a true statement piece for a temple, meditation room, altar space, or any sacred corner of your home.

At the center sits Shakyamuni in full lotus on a pink lotus throne, his right hand extended downward in the earth-touching mudra, the gesture he made as he called the earth itself to witness his awakening, silencing the armies of Mara. His left hand rests in his lap holding an alms bowl. A luminous mandorla halo radiates behind him in deep green and gold, surrounded by an ornate circular border of intricate detail. The landscape behind him blooms with lotus flowers, mountains, and clouds in vivid jewel tones of blue, green, and pink.

Above him in the heavenly register, smaller Buddhas float in clouds, a traditional Tibetan compositional device indicating the presence of other enlightened beings bearing witness from their celestial realms. To either side of the lotus throne stand two attendant figures, and below the throne a detailed lotus pond scene unfolds with offerings and auspicious symbols arranged in a hexagonal mandala pattern.

The thangka is mounted in the traditional Tibetan style with a rich deep purple and red silk brocade border embellished with gold patterning, red silk side ribbons, a yellow and gold silk top drape, and a weighted wooden dowel at the bottom for hanging. It arrives ready to hang.
