The Laughing Buddha, known as Budai or Hotei, is the cheerful wandering monk of Chinese Buddhist folklore whose beaming smile and round belly have made him a beloved symbol of joy, contentment, and abundance. As a Feng Shui ornament he is treasured for attracting prosperity, good fortune, and positive energy into a home or business, while warding off negative influences and evil spirits, his very presence an invitation to happiness and wealth.

He sits with legs folded, his broad laughing face turned upward in an open, joyful grin above hanging earlobes and a full, exposed belly, the timeless mark of a contented life. In his right hand he holds a Ru-Yi scepter, the classic Chinese emblem of power and the granting of wishes, while his left hand loops a strand of mala beads across his knee. A long beaded necklace drapes across his chest, ending in an auspicious bat, the Feng Shui symbol of good fortune, above a Chinese coin inscribed with prosperity characters, a further charm for attracting wealth. His robe falls in thick, fluid folds around his frame, and he rests on a wide double-lotus throne carved with scrolling petals and detailed borders. The best way to maintain the statue is to simply dust the piece periodically to keep any dirt from accumulating. These statues are mostly small and meant for indoor use.
