Foo dogs, known in Chinese as shishi or imperial lions, are among the most enduring protective symbols in East Asian art and architecture. Despite their name, they depict lions rather than dogs, and have stood guard at the entrances of temples, palaces, and family homes across China for over a thousand years. Placed flanking a gate or doorway, they are believed to ward off negative energy and malevolent spirits while drawing in good fortune and protecting everyone within the household.

This listing is for a matched pair, each figure seated upright in the traditional guardian posture with the head turned slightly inward toward the entrance they flank. Both figures wear ornamental collars hung with a pendant bell, a classic detail seen in imperial Chinese lion sculptures. Their faces carry the characteristic foo dog expression: wide-set eyes, a broad flat nose, a mane of tight carved curls, and a powerful jaw. The male figure, positioned on the right when facing the entrance, rests his front paw on a carved globe representing the Flower of Life and his dominion over the external world and the home's structure. The female, positioned on the left, rests her paw on a lion cub beneath her, representing her role as protector of the people inside the home and guardian of the family spirit. Both figures sit on flat integral bases and are carved with detailed surface work across the mane, collar, and paws.

The sculptures are carved in stone with a rustic finish that gives the surface a weathered, aged appearance. This finish suits outdoor placement and integrates naturally into garden and landscape settings. Each figure is large enough to hold presence at a wide gate, driveway entrance, garden path, or the base of exterior stairs. Stone of this density withstands rain, sun, and temperature changes without deteriorating, making these appropriate for permanent outdoor installation.

Foo dogs are traditionally placed in pairs and positioned correctly by gender: male on the right, female on the left, as viewed from inside looking out toward the entrance. Placing them at the front of a home, garden gate, or business entrance follows a tradition observed across Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Southeast Asian cultures for centuries.

"Guarding entrances for centuries, Foo Dogs symbolize protection, strength, prosperity, and good fortune."
      ~ Foo Dogs ~

Foo Dogs, also known as Chinese Guardian Lions, Shishi Lions, Imperial Lions, or Fu Dogs, are a few of the most famous and iconic protective symbols in Asian art and architecture. Placed mainly at the entrances of temples, palaces, gardens, homes, and businesses, these majestic guardian statues have traditionally been thought to not only repel bad energy, evil spirits, and mishaps but also to bring in wealth, success, and harmony.

Foo Dogs are actually not dogs at all, although the name is very popular. They are very ornate lion icons since the lion has always been considered the animal of courage, authority, wisdom, and protection. Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, guardian lion statues powerful symbols of imperial authority, protection, and spiritual guardship later spread throughout Asia where their reverence continues even today.

It is a custom that Foo Dog statues be shown as a pair consisting of a male and a female. Usually, the male Foo Dog is illustrated with a decorative ball under his paw, which stands for protection of the world, leadership, and strength. The female, however, is with a cub, which symbolizes family, maternal instinct, and protection of future generations. In fact, their union depicts the perfect harmony of yin and yang the male and female energies, power, and love.

Foo Dogs are a very common Feng Shui protective symbol, mainly when placed near doors, gates, yards, and walkways. This way, they are thought to not only produce a defense barrier against destructive forces but also to bring about the circulation of chi, the strengthening of the body vitality, the accumulation of wealth, and the ushering in of good tidings. Their impressive look is what makes them a very popular choice for both homes and businesses.

Nowadays, hand-carved Foo Dog statues, Fu Dog sculptures, and Chinese Guardian Lion statues are highly sought after for their historical value, artistic beauty, and symbolic meaning. Used either inside or outside the house, these icons serve as everlasting reminders of protection, wealth, power, and spiritual guardianship, turning them into an important part of the house, garden, temple, or business setting.
