Ganesha is the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati and the most widely invoked deity in Hinduism. As the remover of obstacles, lord of new beginnings, and patron of wisdom and the arts, he is called upon before any significant undertaking in life, work, or spiritual practice. His iconography is among the richest in all of Hindu sacred art, with each attribute in his hands and on his body carrying precise symbolic meaning. This sculpture presents one of the most complete and iconographically detailed renderings of Ganesha available in stone garden sculpture.

This sculpture depicts Ganesha seated with one foot resting on the ground and the other raised, in a posture of relaxed authority. He has four arms, each holding a specific attribute. His lower right hand is raised in abhaya mudra, the open-palmed gesture of fearlessness and divine protection directed toward the devotee. His lower left hand holds a laddu, the round sweet associated with Ganesha as a symbol of the rewards he bestows on his devotees, prosperity, success, and the sweetness of life fulfilled. His upper right hand holds an ankusha, the elephant goad or axe, which he uses to clear obstacles and remove obstructions from the devotee's path. His upper left hand holds a fly whisk, a symbol of royal authority and divine status used in traditional Hindu ceremonial worship. A cobra is draped across his chest and over his left shoulder, coiling at his body, a direct connection to his father Shiva who also wears the cobra as a sacred ornament. Around his neck hangs a mala bead necklace draped in full relief across his chest. He wears a decorated waistband and ornamental clothing with carved surface detail across the garment. Carved bracelets and armlets are visible at his wrists and upper arms. Behind his head rises a carved halo or prabhamandala, a circular aureole representing divine radiance and the sacred light that emanates from a deity's presence. At his feet sits Mooshika, the mouse who serves as Ganesha's vehicle and mount, a small but clearly carved figure at the base of the sculpture. Mooshika represents the ego and desire that Ganesha has mastered and rides rather than being controlled by.

The sculpture is carved from stone with a dark grey surface and fine even texture that holds the dense iconographic detail throughout. Stone of this density suits permanent outdoor garden placement and develops a natural patina over time. The level of detail across this piece, from the cobra wrapping, the individual mala beads, the fly whisk, the halo, the decorated garment, and the Mooshika at his feet, reflects sustained and skilled hand-finishing work.

At 44 inches tall, this Ganesha commands strong garden presence. He works as a garden centerpiece, at an entrance gate or driveway, as the anchor of an outdoor puja space, or indoors in a large entryway, mandir room, or dedicated altar. For anyone seeking a complete and iconographically rich Ganesha, this sculpture presents his full attributes with clarity and devotional depth.

      ~A Hymn from Sri Bhagavat-Tathva~

The chubby, gentle, wise, elephant-headed Ganesh, or Ganesha, is one of Hinduisms most popular deities. He is the remover of obstacles, the deity whom worshippers first acknowledge when they visit a temple. He is also patron of letters and of learning; he is the legendary scribe who, using his broken tusk, which he often holds, wrote down parts of the Mahabharata epic. Ganesh is usually depicted colored red; he is pot bellied, has one tusk broken, and has four arms that may hold a pasam, a goad, and a pot of rice or sweetmeats. The sweet meats are held in a type of bowl known as a laddus. His appetite for these sweets is legendary and offerings of them are often left at his shrine.

Statues of Ganesh can be found in most Indian towns. His image is placed where new houses are to be built; he is honored at the start of a journey or business venture, and poets traditionally invoke him at the start of a book.

A pasam is a triple twine weapon. Each of the three twines represents, arrogance and conceit, Maya - the illusory nature of the real world, ignorance. In Hindu ideology weapons are a viewed as symbolic tools to destroy the ego rather than to cause any type of bloodshed. Goads (or elephant prods) are typically used to direct elephants. Goads are symbolic of how one should steer the soul away from the ignorance and illusions of this earthly world just as a mahout would steer an elephant away from any treacherous path.

Lava stone statues from Bali do not need much maintenance. The best way to maintain the statue is to simply dust the piece periodically to keep any dirt from accumulating. They can be used for both indoor and outdoor use.

You can use soap, warm water and a cotton cloth to periodically go over the statue to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

Soap and warm water is the best way to maintain the statue. You can use a small brush to get into the small crevices of the statue like the hands and hair.

Lava stone's durability makes it perfect for cold winters and hot summers of any climate. The stone can stand up to the harshest conditions of heat and bitter cold.
