Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, is one of the most beloved and complete divine figures in all of Hindu tradition, worshipped as the god of love, joy, compassion, and divine wisdom. In his form as Govinda the divine cowherder, Krishna stands in tribhanga, the triple-flexed posture of classical Indian devotional art where the body curves at the neck, waist, and knee in a gesture of effortless grace and divine play. The flute he holds to his lips is one of the most powerful symbols in Hindu tradition: it represents the human soul hollowed out by devotion, made empty enough to carry the breath of the divine. When Krishna plays, he is not simply making music but calling out to every soul in creation, and in Hindu belief the sound of his flute reaches across all barriers of time, form, and distance to draw his devotees back toward the divine source. A sacred cow stands beside him at the base and reaches upward to lick his foot, an act of intimate devotion that in Hindu tradition represents the sacred bond between Krishna and the cow, an animal understood as a manifestation of the divine mother herself. The cow licking his foot is a gesture of recognition, the sacred animal acknowledging in its own language the divinity of the one it serves.

This sculpture is hand-carved and hand-painted in India with the full visual vocabulary of classical South Indian temple art. Krishna's skin is painted in the deep celestial blue that identifies him across all traditions, his form adorned with layered gold and red bead garlands cascading from neck to waist, green dhoti panels, and gold armlets and anklets at each limb. A large circular halo rises behind his crowned head in warm gold and orange, the crown itself a tall tiered form with gold and red detailing. The sacred cow is painted in cream and white with gold collar ornaments, her form carefully carved to show the natural curve of the animal reaching upward in devotion. The lotus base is painted with red arch panel detailing and a large central rosette medallion in gold and orange, the lower tier in green with carved petal forms. At 30 inches tall this murti brings Krishna's divine joy, the sound of his eternal flute, and the sacred intimacy of his relationship with the cow into any puja room, home altar, or living space where his presence is welcomed.

One of the most widely revered and most popular of all Indian divinities, is Krishna worshipped as the eighth incarnation (avatar) of Vishnu. Krishna became the focus of a large number of devotional cults, which over the centuries have produced a wealth of religious poetry, music, painting and sculpture.

The child Krishna was adored for his mischievous pranks; he also performed many miracles and slew demons. As a youth, the cowherd Krishna became renown as a lover, the sound of his flute prompting gopis (wives and daughters of the cowherds) to leave their homes to dance ecstatically with him in the forests. His favorite among them was the beautiful Radha. Krishna's youthful dalliances with the gopis are interpreted as symbolic of the loving interplay between God and the human soul. Krishna affirms life in his pranks, music and lovemaking.

The rich variety of legends associated with Krishna's life led to an abundance of representation in painting and sculpture. The most reknown story surrounding Krishna is the Bahgavad Gita or Gita which is considered one of the most importatnt Hindu texts. The Gita is the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna. Krishna is explaining to Arjuna that it is Arjuna's moral obligation to fight in a war that will put him against some members of his family. Krishna like Vishnu is an upholder of the moral order of the universe.

The use of a wood polish will keep the wood looking fresh and the colors vibrant.

Wood statues are easy to take care of as they just need some annual upkeep to keep them looking as they did when they were first carved. All the wood used by Lotus Sculpure's artists is dried out for months. Moisture causes cracks in the sculpture as the wood contracts and expands in different temperatures. Our wood has little to no moisture in it assuring that the sculpture is not going to crack in its journey into different climates. Here are some simple tips to keep your statue in good condition:

      • Dust the statue as needed to prevent dirt build up
      • To make the statue shine use a natural wood cleaner and a cotton cloth to buff the sculpture

We prefer Old English to polish and buff our statues. The use of a wood polish like Old English will keep the wood looking fresh and keep the colors looking vibrant. For natural wood and painted wooden statues we recommend Old English for lighter woods. For darker wood statues we recommend Old English for darker woods. Lotus Sculpture cleans and polishes each wooden statue prior to shipping them to the customer.

We recommend keeping wooden statues in an indoor environment. Wood statues can go outside however, they will wear more quickly and develop an antique appearance. If you would like to put a wood statue from Lotus Sculpture outside and keep the same appearance of the sculpture we would recommend first coating the statue with a couple of layers of sealant or polyurethane. We would then recommend placing the statue in a partially covered area. The more exposure to the elements the more the statue will wear over time. Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions regarding your wooden statue from Lotus Sculpture, (760) 994-4455 or info@lotussculpture.com.
