      • The stupa is one of Buddhism's most ancient sacred forms, a monument representing the Buddha's enlightened mind whose presence in a garden or home is traditionally understood to purify the surrounding space and generate merit for all who encounter it
      • This stupa follows the classical Borobudur form with an open diamond lattice dome that allows light through its hollow chamber, sitting on a lotus and foliate carved tiered base beneath a square harmika platform and a clean tapering spire
      • It works as a garden path marker, a companion to a Buddha sculpture, or an indoor altar piece, and with a light inside the lattice chamber it becomes a lantern casting geometric light patterns at night
      • This Stupa is hand carved from one block of stone, completely one of a kind and perfect for the outdoors, you will receive this exact statue that will light up your garden
The stupa is one of the oldest and most universally recognized forms in Buddhist sacred architecture. Originating in ancient India as a burial mound for the remains of enlightened teachers, the stupa evolved over centuries into a monument representing the Buddha himself, his mind, and the path to enlightenment. Each structural element carries meaning: the base represents the earth and the foundation of practice, the dome or anda represents the world egg and the womb of enlightenment, and the spire rising above represents the axis mundi, the central axis connecting earth and heaven through which awakening ascends. Stupas are found across Buddhist Asia from India and Sri Lanka to Indonesia, Tibet, Thailand, and Japan, in forms ranging from massive temple complexes to small garden shrines. Placing a stupa in a garden or home is considered an act of merit in Buddhist tradition, as its presence is believed to purify the surrounding space and benefit all who pass near it.

This stupa is carved from volcanic stone, a dense dark grey material from Indonesia with a fine, even surface texture. It follows the classical Borobudur stupa form, the same form found on the great ninth-century Buddhist monument in Central Java, one of the largest Buddhist structures ever built. The domed anda chamber is carved with an open diamond lattice pattern, a grid of square apertures cut entirely through the stone wall, allowing light to pass through the hollow interior. This hollow chamber traditionally houses a small Buddha figure or sacred relic within the larger Borobudur stupas, and in this garden version the open lattice invites the placement of a tea candle or small votive light inside, casting patterned light outward through the diamond openings at night. The dome sits on a circular collar band above a tiered round base carved with a foliate and lotus motif running around its perimeter. Above the dome, a square harmika platform supports the tapering pointed spire that rises to a clean apex.

Volcanic stone is a permanent outdoor material that weathers naturally in garden conditions, developing a subtle patina over time. Its dark tone grounds the stupa visually in a garden setting and provides contrast against plantings, gravel, or water. The carving throughout this piece is hand-finished, with the lattice cuts, the lotus base relief, and the clean taper of the spire all requiring careful hand tool work.

At 21 inches tall, this stupa works as a garden path marker, a focal point in a Buddhist garden, a companion piece beside a Buddha sculpture, or a standalone accent in a courtyard or meditation garden. It can also be used indoors on an altar shelf, meditation room floor, or entryway. With a candle placed inside the lattice chamber, it functions as a lantern, casting geometric light patterns in the surrounding space after dark.

"If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change."
       ~ Buddha~
The Buddha, whose original name was Siddhartha Gautama, was the founder of Buddhism, the religion and the philosophical system that produced a great culture throughout much of southern and eastern Asia.  Buddha, meaning "awakened one" or "enlightened one" is a title not a name.  In Hindu Dogma, the Buddha is viewed as being the 9th avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu.
The Buddha was a son of the rulers Sakyas.  He was married at the age of 16 and lived in luxury and comfort sheltered from the harsh realities of life.  When he was 29 he realized that men are subject to old age, sickness and death.  He became aware of the suffering inherent in existence.  He resolved to give up princely life and become a wandering ascetic (samana) in search for the Truth.
With the two of samanas he attained mystical states of elevated consciousness but he failed to find the Truth.  He continued his search and was joined by five ascetics in a grove near Uruvela, where he practiced sever austerities and self-mortification for six years.  When he fainted away in weakness, he abandoned ascetic practices to seek his own path to Enlightenment.  Discarding the teachings of his contemporaries, through meditation he achieved Enlightenment, or ultimate understanding.  There after the Buddha instructed his followers in the dharma (truth) and the "Middle Way" a path between worldly life and extremes of self-denial.
The essence of the Buddha's early preaching was said to be the four Noble truths: 1) life is fundamentally disappointment and suffering.  2) suffering is a result of one's desires for pleasure, power, and continued existence; 3) to stop disappointment and suffering on must stop desiring; and 4) the way to stop desiring and thus suffering is the Noble eight fold path - right views, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right awareness and right concentration.  The realization of the truth of anatman (no eternal self) was taught as essential for the indescribable state of release called nirvana.
