The peacock sculpture is wonderfully carved giving it a lifelike appearance. The piece is carved all the way around making it viewable from every angle. From the beak to the feet the bird is magnificently carved. The peacock is a prominent bird in India. The peacock is the vehicle of Lord Murugan. The peacock struts around admiring his own beauty. Murugan places himself on top of the peacock suppressing the bird, reminding us not to let pride and egotism get the better of us. The peacock is also associated with Krishna. In India peacocks are considered inauspicious. When Krishna heard that, he picked up a peacock's feather and placed it on His crown mocking everyone's fears.
The painting scheme is adopted from the bright colors used in south Indian temples. The temples are known for their large gopurams or towers that rise up into the sky decorated with various gods and goddesses. The gopurams are painted in vibrant colors which mirror the vibrant life of south India.
