About This Pair of Small Foo Dog Garden Statues

Chinese guardian lions are known as Shishi, or in the West, Foo Dogs. They are not dogs at all but lions. They are iconic images of pre-modern China and have traditionally stood outside imperial palaces and the homes of the wealthy. They are believed to have powerful protective benefits. They are always displayed as a pair with a male and female lion. The male is shown on the left and the female on the right - a manifestation of yin and yang, the female representing yin and the male yang. According to feng shui, correct placement of the lions is important to ensure their beneficial effect. When looking out of a building through the entrance to be guarded - looking in the same direction as the lions - the male is placed on the left and the female on the right. When looking at the entrance from outside the building, facing the lions, the male lion is on the right and the female is on the left.

Why These Small Foo Dog Statues Are Perfect for Indoor and Outdoor Use?

At just 13 inches tall and 20 lbs each, these small Foo Dog garden sculptures are the most versatile size in our Foo Dog collection. Unlike our larger 40 inch volcanic stone Foo Dogs and 60 inch lava stone Foo Dogs - which are permanent outdoor installations - these compact Shishi guardian lion statues are genuinely multi-purpose. Customers use them as indoor Foo Dog statues flanking a fireplace, bookshelf, hallway table, or home altar, as porch or patio entrance guardians, as small garden path Foo Dogs, and as Feng Shui home placement statues on either side of a front door or gate. The white patina finish pairs beautifully with both contemporary minimalist interiors and classic garden settings. At $399 for the pair, these are also our most affordable Foo Dog statues, making them a popular entry point for customers new to guardian lion sculptures.

Where to Place These Small Shishi Guardian Lion Statues?

Small Foo Dog statues follow the same traditional feng shui placement rules as their larger counterparts. Place them in pairs at entrances - flanking a front door, porch steps, garden gate, or driveway pillar - to invite protection and positive energy. The female (paw on the cub) goes on the left when viewed from outside, and the male (paw on the globe) on the right. Indoors, customers place these small Shishi lions on either side of a fireplace, on a shelf flanking a window, or on a home altar. Their compact 13 inch size and 20 lb weight makes them easy to reposition as your interior or garden layout changes.

How to Maintain Your Small Foo Dog Garden Statues?

These volcanic stone Foo Dog statues require minimal upkeep. Rinse with clean water periodically to remove dust or pollen. In humid outdoor environments, the stone may develop a natural mossy patina over time - a gentle stone cleaner will restore the white patina finish if preferred. At 20 lbs each, these small Foo Dog statues are light enough to bring indoors during winter in freezing climates. With basic care, these small garden Foo Dog statues will remain a striking and protective presence for years.

~ Foo Dogs ~

Foo Dogs, also known as Chinese Guardian Lions, Shishi Lions, Imperial Lions, or Fu Dogs, are a few of the most famous and iconic protective symbols in Asian art and architecture. Placed mainly at the entrances of temples, palaces, gardens, homes, and businesses, these majestic guardian statues have traditionally been thought to not only repel bad energy, evil spirits, and mishaps but also to bring in wealth, success, and harmony.

Foo Dogs are actually not dogs at all, although the name is very popular. They are very ornate lion icons since the lion has always been considered the animal of courage, authority, wisdom, and protection. Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, guardian lion statues powerful symbols of imperial authority, protection, and spiritual guardship later spread throughout Asia where their reverence continues even today.

It is a custom that Foo Dog statues be shown as a pair consisting of a male and a female. Usually, the male Foo Dog is illustrated with a decorative ball under his paw, which stands for protection of the world, leadership, and strength. The female, however, is with a cub, which symbolizes family, maternal instinct, and protection of future generations. In fact, their union depicts the perfect harmony of yin and yang the male and female energies, power, and love.

Foo Dogs are a very common Feng Shui protective symbol, mainly when placed near doors, gates, yards, and walkways. This way, they are thought to not only produce a defense barrier against destructive forces but also to bring about the circulation of chi, the strengthening of the body vitality, the accumulation of wealth, and the ushering in of good tidings. Their impressive look is what makes them a very popular choice for both homes and businesses.

Nowadays, hand-carved Foo Dog statues, Fu Dog sculptures, and Chinese Guardian Lion statues are highly sought after for their historical value, artistic beauty, and symbolic meaning. Used either inside or outside the house, these icons serve as everlasting reminders of protection, wealth, power, and spiritual guardianship, turning them into an important part of the house, garden, temple, or business setting.
