Description A stunning South India bronze sculpture of Patanjali; the father of yoga and author of the yoga sutras. The simplicity of the sculpture is what makes this piece divine. The statue is completely linear with eye following the piece from the lotus base to the coils of Patanjali's lower body and up to his torso and bearded face.  Patanjali's lower half of his body is a twisted corkscrew  tail of a cobra with the upper body of a man.  He wears his copious hair in a bun on top of his head with earrings and a full beard.  Both his hands are clasp together in a the anjali mudra or namaste hand position of greeting.  A beautiful representation of yoga sage Patanjali!
About Patanjali Often called "the father of yoga", Patanjali was the sage who codified his thoughts and knowledge of yoga in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.  In this work, Patanjali compiled 195 sutras or concise aphorisms that are essentially an ethical blueprint for living a moral life and incorporating the science of yoga into your life. Although no one is sure of the exact time when Patanjali lived and wrote down his sutras, it is estimated this humble physician who became one of the world's greatest sages roamed India somewhere between 200 B.C. and 200 A.D.

Pantanjali's life story is somewhat unknown, leaving many details unexplained and disputed.  Pantanjali was born to Atri and Anusuya; both masters of Ashtanga yoga.  The details surrounding his birth have assumed mythical  dimensions.  It is said that in order to teach yoga, Pantanjali fell from the heavens in the form of a little snake, and fell into his virginal mother's open palms. Patanjali is regarded as an incarnation of the thousand-headed serpent-king named Remainder (Shesha) or Endless (Ananta), whose coils are said to support the god Vishnu.  His most known accomplishment is the compilation of the Yoga Sutras, a major work which contains aphorisms on the philosophical aspects of mind and consciousness, and is the assumed writer of work on the ancient Indian medicine system.   Recently Yoga Sutra has become popular worldwide for the precepts of Raja Yoga, and also the philosophical basis of the Yoga movement, which aids in the health of harmonizing of the body mind.

Pantanjali is worshiped by the dancers of India as their patron saint.  However, Pantanjali's reputation as a great dancer is doubted by scholars who know him as the author of the famous Yoga Sutras.
Care

Bronze is an extremely durable metal made from a combination of 5 metals; copper, iron, tin, with minute additions of silver and gold.  This combination is called Panchaloha bronze and is the basis for making the sacred Hindu temple statues of India and the world.  Copper is the most prevalent metal in the alloy.  Copper also gives the metal a softer composition that allows the bronze artisans to carve the details that are prevalent in each piece.    All the South Indian bronze sculpture Lotus Sculpture carries are Panchaloham and thus suited for any home altar or community temple.

"If you would like the piece to shine use a cotton cloth with some coconut oil or other natural oil to wipe down the bronze statue."

Because of the durability of the metal not much is needed to maintain a bronze sculpture.  Many of our customers purchase a bronze statue and perform daily puja and abhisheka consisting of bathing the Hindu deity in ghee, milk, coconut milk or other liquids.  In this case nothing is needed to keep the statue clean as it will be bathed daily.  If the sculpture is used for "darshan" or simply viewing the sculpture it is best to dust the statue as needed so no dirt collects in the details of the sculpture. For both polished golden bronzes and antique patina bronze statues if you would like the sculpture to shine use a cotton cloth with some coconut oil or other natural oil to wipe down the piece as needed.

Many of our bronze Hindu statues have been placed in outdoor temples.  Bronze's durability makes it perfect for cold winters and hot summers of any climate.  We suggest you bathe the sculpture every couple of months so that dirt does not collect on the sculpture and then use a cotton cloth with some natural oil to give the statue a shine.  Both indoors and outdoors a bronze statue can be left alone which, overtime, will give the bronze an antique patina.

On some bronze statues you can see small hints of lime green, verde-gris patina.  Some people prize this color for its age others want to remove it.  If you would like to remove the verde-gris use a tooth brush with some coconut oil or other natural oil and lightly go over the verde-gris.  This should remove the unwanted patina from the sculpture.
