The Bodhisattva Samantabhadra is one of the 4 great Bodhitsattvas in Chinese Buddhism. He is seated on the back of a white elephant that has 6 tusks. The size of the elephant reflects his ability to shoulder great responsibilities and the white color represents purity. The 6 tusks of the elephant represent the 6 Perfections or Paramitas which are; wisdom, contemplation or meditation, diligence, patience, ethics and generosity. He holds a blooming lotus flower representing purity that looks to be growing from the palm of his right hand.

After a visit from a monk from a temple in Riverside, California he explained to me the true identity of this Bodhisattva as Samantabhadra and the details as to why he rides an elephant with 6 tusks. He also explained the true identity of the other statue in his hands riding a lion as the Bodhisattva Manjushri. I love that I am constantly learning something new every day!"
